Celebrating 100 Years
Mayor Anita Betancourt speaks to community members next to a plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of Reedley’s first City Hall, which is now the Reedley Museum, on March 3, 2017. The Reedley historical society dedicated the occasion to the men and women who worked in the building for so many years, which includes city employees, and members of the police and fire departments and ambulance service. The plaque will be mounted on the building adjacent to the front door.
Reedley Historical Society and Museum
The Reedley Historical Society was established in 1976 and is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and promotion of the rich history of the Reedley district. Chief among the society’s activities is its operation of the Reedley Museum, located downtown under the city’s iconic twin water towers.
The Reedley Museum opened in 1979 and houses an exceptional collection of Yokuts American Indian artifacts, exhibits depicting life at the turn-of-the-century in Southern Fresno County, a collection of antique farm equipment, an array of articles distinctive to Reedley’s past, and revolving exhibits that focus on the ethnic and cultural diversity of Reedley.
The museum is housed in what was Reedley’s very first City Hall. Erected in 1917, the building housed the city’s administrative offices, police department, and fire department. In later years, the city’s ambulance service also used the facility and the Mid-Valley Fire Department maintained a station in the building. Some old timers still can recall when the jail, a separate and very primitive structure, stood out back.
