It is through their dedication, commitment, and hard
work that the City of Reedley can provide year around
services and programs for the seniors of Reedley. Over
100 volunteers work on a daily, weekly, monthly and
yearly basis to help carry out our services and programs.
Our volunteers range in age from 55 to 95 years young
and their energies are a marvel.

Heart Beat A Coronary Risk Evaluation
Heartbeat is a community health service program that
will be offered again for those individuals who want
to check their risk for coronary artery disease. The
blood draw and medical history is done at the Community
Center in February from 7:00am to 8:30am. Services will
be done though appointment only. There is no age restriction
for this program. A 12-hour fast is necessary before
the blood drawing - no food or beverage other than water
should be taken after 7:00 p.m. the night before your
appointment. The PSA test is for the early detection
of cancer of the prostate in men. An evaluation of these
tests is done in March. The fees charged cover only
the cost of the tests.
Reduced Fee Fishing License
The Senior Services Office has Reduced-Fee Licenses
available. You must meet one of the following restrictions.
- Be 65 years or older and receiving SSI. You must
submit verification from Social Security or a copy
of last year's reduced-fee license.
- Be an honorably discharged veteran with a service
connected disability of 70% or more. Proof must be
received from Veteran's Administration or a copy of
last year's reduced-fee license.
- Be 65 years or older, and a resident of California
with a total income of less than $870 for a single
person or $1524 for a couple. You must submit income
verification from Social Security or a copy of last
year's reduced-fee license.
Fiesta Royal Court Luncheon
Sponsored by the Commission
on Aging. You are invited to join many former Reedley
Fiesta Kings, Queens and Parade Marshals for the 13th
Annual Royal Court Luncheon at the Reedley Community
Center held in October.
Diaper Derby
Sponsored by the Reedley Commission
on Aging and Sierra View Homes. Infants ages 6 to
12 months old who are not yet walking are encouraged
to participate in crawling races. Cash prizes will be awarded
for first, second and third places in each event.
When: October (the Friday before the Fiesta)
Where: Sierra View Homes
Registration: 9:45 a.m.
Races Begin: 10:00 a.m.
Hot Meals
Congregate Meals: Appetites are so much better when you can eat in the company of others! Due to government cutbacks, we have a limited number of meals available each weekday at 11:00a.m. in the Senior Room at the Community Center. Reservations must be made on Thursdays the week before you plain to attend. This program is partially funded by the Fresno Madera Area Agency on Aging.
Alternate Lunches: A few times a month we have Alternative Lunches. Usually we celebrate monthly birthdays and anniversaries with cake on these days. Monthly Bingo: Come for lunch and win a prize. Everyone is a winner! Reservations for alternative lunches must be made by 11:00a.m. the weekday before you plan to attend.
Movie Matinee
FREE movies most Thursdays, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., shown in the Phil M. Hudson Senior
Room at the Reedley Community Center. Refreshments are
served. Popular classics as well as recent releases
are shown. Plan to join us and enjoy an entertaining
afternoon.
Senior Exercise
The Senior Exercise class is sponsored by Reedley College and the Reedley Community Services Department and held in the California Room at the Community Center. The class is geared to improve the circulation and muscle tone of seniors. A fee is charged each semester by the college. Mon. and Wed. the class meets at 10:00a.m. If you arrive at 9:30 you can join the walkers. A free video class is offered on Friday at 10:00a.m.
Senior Potluck Luncheon
Join us every month for the Senior Potluck Luncheon. Bring your table service, a side dish (that serves 6) to share and a hearty appetite. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (except in the summer) at noon in the California Room at the Community Center. Each potluck provides entertainment, door prizes, and a good time shared by one and all. Join us next month. No potlucks during the summer months (July-October)
HICAP
Do you have questions about supplemental health insurance?
Are you confused about choosing between Medicare and
an HMO? A HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy
Program) volunteer may be able to assist you. This program
is designed to assist seniors with filing claims, understanding
coverage, and fighting denials of claims by both Medicare
and any HMO. Call the HICAP central office at 1-800-434-0222 to set up an appointment.
Information and Assistance
Finding services to meet the needs of seniors and their
families can be very challenging. The Reedley Senior
Services Office would like to help. Call our office
at (559) 637-4207 and the staff will provide information
and assistance to seniors and their families within
the Reedley area.
Reedley Senior Gleaners
Fresh fruits and vegetables are distributed to seniors
every Wednesday by the volunteer Senior Gleaners. Distribution
is done on the patio at the Reedley Community Center
from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Donations are welcomed
and new senior "gleaners" are too! You must be at least 60 years old or disabled to participate. Must have ID available.
AARP Mature Drivers Class
The Senior Services office and the American Association of Retired Person (AARP) offer the Mature Drivers Class (50 years and over). If you have a certificate from a previous class, you may take the refresher course (4 hours). Otherwise, an 8 hour course is held over two days. AARP charges $10.00 for the classes. Upon completion of the class, a certificate will be issued which may qualify the senior for a reduced auto insurance premium. The classes are usually held three times a year. Call for the scheduled next class.
Senior Home Owner's & Renter's Assistance
The Senior Services Office offers limited services
assisting anyone who is 62 years old or older, blind
or disabled in completing their California Homeowner's
or Renter's Assistance claims. To file a claim, your
adjusted income must not exceed a certain maximum amount.
The senior claims will be filed from July to October.
Call (559) 637-4207 for an appointment. Due to State budget cuts, this program may be discontinued for 2009.

A monthly newsletter is published by the Senior Services
Office and the Reedley Commission on Aging. If you are
a senior and wish to receive the newsletter, please
call the Senior Services Office at (559) 637-4207. Donations are greatly appreciated and a tax deductible.
Legal Services
Due to budget cuts, our representative is no longer able to come to Reedley. You may call Central California Legal Services Fresno office at 1-800-675-8001 for assistance in civil matters.
Senior Blood Pressure Testing
Senior citizens may have their blood pressure and weight
checked by volunteers on the first Wednesday of every
month from 8:30-10:00 a.m. This free service
is provided for seniors in the Foyer at the Reedley
Community Center.
Senior Hearing Testing
Free hearing testing services are offered in the Phil
M. Hudson Senior Room on a bi-monthly basis. This service
is offered from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and no appointment
is necessary. Please bring your hearing aid, if you
wear one, on testing day. You may also have your hearing aid batteries tested. Call for details.
Social Security
A representative from Social Security comes to the Kings River Room at the Community Center on the 3rd Wednesday of each month between 9:00-12:00 noon. No appointment is necessary and it is first come, first served. Schedule is subject to change.
Senior Tax Services
The Reedley Senior Services office and the American
Association of Retired Persons (AARP) offer free tax
services for anyone 60 years old and older. Senior tax
services will be available on Mondays from 9:00 am to
3:00 pm starting in February and ending in April. No appointment needed for this FREE service.
Equipment Loan Service
The Senior Services Office has a small loan equipment
service. This service is for any senior who may need
to borrow, for a short time, wheelchairs, walkers,
portable potty chairs, and/or transfer bench shower chair. We
also have a limited quantity of home care supplies such
as disposable undergarment pads for any senior.
Pool Table
The Reedley Senior Services Office now has a pool table
for seniors to play. The pool table hours are Monday
through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and Monday and
Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. through 12:45 p.m. If you

Senior Get-A-Ways
Come and be an active part of our Senior Center. We don't just sit and gather dust! Several times a year we are busy taking field trips. Here are some examples: Blossom Trail, New Wrinkles, Coast trip, Christmas Pageant, local casinos, mystery trip, cruises and more surprises to come.
